MESA OFFICER BATTLING A.L.S. DISEASE TO KEEP JOB, CITY BENEFITS
MESA F.O.P. HELPS OFFICER KELLY REACH AGREEMENT WITH CITY
The Arizona Fraternal Order of Police is proud to announce that Mesa Police Officer Mark Kelly, who is courageously battling A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), will keep his job and not suffer a reduction in benefits. The Mesa F.O.P. made the announcement on Wednesday after assisting Kelly with negotiations involving top Mesa officials and the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System. The City on Wednesday reversed an earlier decision to deny Kelly’s benefits and end his employment contract.
Kelly will now be able to serve as a police officer in the station when possible, and from home as situations dictate, with no reduction in benefits. He also will keep his police officer certification, which will benefit his wife and children in years to come. Additionally, Kelly can utilize vacation time that many Mesa officers have donated to him.
“Since the start of this whole mess, the Mesa F.O.P. has always been the first in line to ask me what I need help with and what I need,” Kelly said. “I knew that my fellow officers would be there when I needed them the most.” |
